True, there's not much on the agenda, but I think it is important that the public take advantage of its first chance to comment on his issue and to weigh tin while the iron is hot.
Amy, there doesn’t have to be much on the council agenda for you to offer a constituent’s comment during the “open mic” part of the meeting. We need to keep the heat on the council. I think they’re counting on time to pass, us to get complacent, then they’ll try to sneak things in when they think we’re not paying attention.
This behavior and hypocrisy cannot be swept under the rug. Please come to the meeting tonight and let them know you are paying attention and that they will be held accountable. Be respectful and vigilant. A very slim portion of Longview voters chose to take their ballot off the kitchen counter, fill it out and drop it off or mail it back last November. In The vast majority couldn’t be bothered. This is what you get when people choose not to vote. The folks up on the city council dais impact how citizens get to live in the city. It might be that this “Fantastic MAGA 4” may get more than the usual amount of attention, more sunshine on their shenanigans and more interest, that may result in a good crop of candidates in 2025 who want to stop this madness. They are counting on complacency and apathy. Be alert. Pay attention and let them know they are going to be held accountable.
I spoke at Thurs meeting before reading this commentary. In the time allowed I did hit on some of your key points. I tried to afford confrontational language but I did adress my comments toward the new members. I did not stay til the end of the meeting.
The city council was willing to spend up to $30,000 to audit the job performance of one city employee. How many potholes could be filled in for $30,000?
The gist is that Kalei used the last five minutes of the meeting to blast everyone who didn’t support the new council members. She said that she’s received threatening emails mentioning her dogs and her kids (public records request would be helpful here). Then she went on to say that the four of them were never welcomed and have never felt welcomed since the day they started. Kalei wrapped up by saying she would pray for all of us and that the four are doing the work of the people who voted them in.
Throughout the meeting, you could see very plainly that there is open hostility between council members. I was there in person. I think it’s going to be a long road before they start cooperating with each other. That’s why we need to keep monitoring what’s going on.
Norms are being rewritten across the country. Change is constant. The ultimate is when a sitting President of the US is trying to jail the leader of the opposition party in an election year.
Ponder what I said before you dismiss it.
I don’t condone nor endorse what the new members are trying to do. Just saying. The times they are a changing.
The sitting President of the US is not tryi8ng to jail the leader of the opposition party. That "leader" committed crimes and the justice system is holding him accountable, just as they would hold you or me accountable for committing crimes.
We will have agree to disagree on that one. My point is that politics on a national scale is more viscous than we have ever seen. No surprise that it spills over locally.
I agree that politics is more hostile locally. That's why I'm part of the Cowlitz Civil Dialogue project. But civility stars with honesty and clarity. Larry Crosby's scare tactics at tonight's council meeting, alleging widespread criminal corruption in the city an example of someone trying to advance their agenda. I hope the council members can get past this.
There’s not much on tonight’s council agenda. Should the firepower be saved for a controversial issue?

If you have a chance, go to the council meeting’s recording and watch the last 5 minutes of the meeting. It’s shocking.
I Can’t get it to come up. What’s the gist ?

Well I’m disappointed that she is getting threats. But she needs to understand that when you are a public official you are subject to scrutiny.
