What's cooking at Blast Zone Media, your local source for prep sports news
Critical gridiron contests approach; playoff season is upon us; and Rick McC. returns to local sports coverage
Jordan Nailon is the former sports editor at The Daily News and is now publisher of Blast Zone Media, which covers Southwest Washington prep sports from the Cowlitz to the coast. Jordan and I are promoting one anothers’ ventures into digital journalism. Here are the treats that he and his freelance writers have waiting for you.
Friday Night Lights
The Kelso and Mark Morris football teams picked up big wins last week. Both teams are gearing up for a playoff push, with the Monarchs set to host Woodland in a 2A GSHL clash with big stakes. Here's where fans can see the full story — with videos — about the Hilanders.
Or, click here for the details on Mark Morris' dramatic victory and all the other local scores in our weekly roundup, which includes photos from around the Blast Zone coverage area.
McCorkle's Corner
Former TDN sports reporter Rick McCorkle has recently joined Blast Zone Media. Much to the delight of readers, McCorkle has resurrected his popular College Report, with details and stats for local athletes who've moved on to play college sports. Here's the second installment of the College Report from last week, and McCorkle's already got Round III cooking.
Looking Back
As seasonal temperatures drop, the harsh reality of postseason competition looms large. The playoff push is on for most teams, and some have already begun. Last week the Mark Morris boys golf team won the 2A GSHL Tournament, and the Kelso slowpitch softball team clinched a spot at the state tournament.
Postseason play will continue for golfers, boys tennis and slowpitch softball players alike this week, with the rest of the sports right on their tail.
Looking Ahead
The R.A. Long and Mark Morris volleyball teams will face off in Round II of this season's Civil War on Thursday night at Ted M. Natt Court. The Lumberjills will make the trek across the lake with revenge on their mind and playoff seeding on the line.
Prior to that match, the Lumberjills of the pitch will be seeking redemption against Hockinson in a 2A GSHL girls soccer match, Tuesday night. R.A. Long will try to defend its home turf at Longview Memorial Stadium while also trying to lock down a top-three spot in the league standings.
