It was always a joy to watch Ichiro- and for that matter, the entire Mariners team of 2001. But Ichiro was a role model of excellence: His throwing arm was laser beam accurate, he was always a gentleman and he had the uncanny ability to put the ball in play- and get hits, not necessarily home runs, but hits that helped the entire team. The Mainers never quit in 2001, and Ichiro was a huge part of their success!
In contrast Joe Kent has been an outspoken denier of Trumps 2020 election loss and has continually supported the BIG LIE that he did in fact lose. Obviously Donald Trump loves obsequious yes men who will do his bidding, regardless of an oath they take- in bad faith- to defend the constitution, not a wannabe dictator, king or tsar.
Ichiro is my favorite baseball player of all time. He is a real role model and even cherishes his bats (carries them around in a protective case). Ichiro has said that he has to take care of his tools because they take care of him. Respect.
I always thought it was a weird irony that Joe Kent ran against Tulsi Gabbard in their Hawaii primary in 2014? 16? Can't remember now. I believe it was Gabbard's first run for Congress. I mean....it was PROBABLY a different Joe Kent...
Enjoyed your comments about Ichiro. My mother-in-law moved to Longview from So Cal in 2000 and becamea huge Mariner fan. I watched almost all of the 2001 season games with her.
I always suspected that Ichiro continued to use a translator so that he would have extra time to come up with a thoughtful answer.
“I’m so tired of athletes…who can’t put a simple grammatical sentence together.”
I usually agree with most of what you say, Andre. Not with this, however. Many of these athletes have spent their entire lives honing their athletic skills, not their grammatical skills, much the same way you’ve been honing your writing skills and not your athletic skills.
Your comment also shows a lack of insight into the fact that we live in such a de facto segregated society that the language used day to day in some neighborhoods amounts to a dialect, and not standard written English. Be careful when you criticize how others speak, unless you’re criticizing an academic paper.
Ichiro, honor deserved, and the good memories will be long lasting amongst us "Wet folk" of the NW.
Dave Cudahy, well, now that I think about it, and having spent some time talking with him, hearing him speak around town, and thank you Andre for "Rebooting" my memory banks, 'cause I hadn't thought of him in a number of years, let me put it this way, not that anyone cares of my opinion, he struck me then as what you might call a Trumpnista and that was before Trump even showed up.
Some folks might have seen Cudahy as conservative, maybe very and I include myself among those.
Joe Kent? Met him. Listened to him speak on several occasions. Even talked with him a couple times.
I don't know if he is the person who's words are who he is or if there's another Joe somewhere inside. I can say this, given where he is now, and the side he's chosen, maybe his words really tell us something about the real Joe Kent.
I study history and what history has shown me is that all great, even lesser empires die. Greeks, Egyptian, Macedonian, Persian, Han, Aztec, Incan, Roman, all gone.
I wonder if the ordinary folks who lived in the times of all those great empires thought it possible they would one day cease to be? Did they see and recognize the beginnings of their demise or did they just about their daily lives ignoring what was coming? Thinking or pretending it could not come to pass?
I wonder, is Joe a symptom of the disease that could kill the body democracy? Even a active participant like a invasive microbe or virus?
If anyone thinks that we just too sophisticated, too immune for what we call nation to pass, dust off those history books and take a look because what has happened can happen again.

Sad, indeed. Keep your head up. Rough road ahead, but I believe we will persevere.
